* Ted Kaczynski - Collected Works, incl. The Unabomber Manifesto (4 books)

THEODORE J. KACZYNSKI (1942–2023) , also known as the Unabomber, was an American mathematician and domestic terrorist. A mathematics prodigy, he abandoned his academic career in 1969 to pursue a reclusive primitive lifestyle in Montana and lone wolf terrorism campaign. After witnessing the destruction of the wilderness surrounding his cabin, he murdered three people and injured 23 others between 1978 and 1995 in a nationwide mail bombing campaign against those he believed to be advancing modern technology and the destruction of the natural environment. He was arrested in 1996 and sentenced to several consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole. In June 2023, Kaczynski hanged himself in prison.

During the period in which he carried out the bombings, Kaczynski developed a systematic body of writing that articulated his opposition to technological modernity. His most widely read text, INDUSTRIAL SOCIETY AND ITS FUTURE (1995), also known as the UNABOMBER MANIFESTO , was published that year in the Washington Post and New York Times. The essay presents a sustained argument that industrial-technological systems tend toward increasing scale, complexity, and social control. Kaczynski contends that such systems displace individual autonomy, weaken small-scale communities, and generate psychological strain. He argues that reform is unlikely to reverse these dynamics because technological systems develop according to internal logics that outpace political oversight, and advocates for a revolutionary movement to hasten their collapse.

The manifesto was later included in TECHNOLOGICAL SLAVERY (2010, with later editions in 2019 and 2022), a compendium of his thoughts and philosophies on technology, freedom, and the impacts of societal progression on autonomy. The book also includes Kaczynski's correspondence with various intellectuals, his responses to criticism, and further elaboration on the themes of technological dominance and its opposition. A second book, ANTI-TECH REVOLUTION: WHY AND HOW (2016, with a second edition in 2020), is a more systematic attempt to outline the theoretical basis for what he saw as an inevitable confrontation between technological systems and human autonomy. Across his writings, a consistent theme is skepticism toward large, centralized systems—whether governmental, corporate, or technological—and a preference for small-scale, self-sufficient forms of life. His analysis draws selectively on traditions of anarchism, primitivism, and earlier technological criticism, while presenting itself as a structural rather than purely moral objection to modern society.

The question of his standing in debates over technology is complex. While Kaczynski's actions were condemned as acts of terrorism, his writings have been a subject of considerable debate and analysis within academic and technological ethics circles. In practice, discussions of his ideas tend to occur within broader examinations of technological skepticism, where his writings are considered alongside those of other critics who engage the issue through conventional intellectual and political channels.
