GLORIA STEINEM (1934–2026)
was an American journalist and social movement activist who was one of the most influential leaders of the modern American feminist movement, dedicating her life to reproductive freedom, gender equality, and intersectional social justice. Emerging as a prominent journalist in the 1960s, she gained widespread recognition for her undercover exposé on the exploitative working conditions of Playboy Bunnies. In 1972, she co-founded Ms. magazine, creating the first national feminist magazine owned and operated by women.

Steinem's written work reshaped cultural conversations around gender, race, and power, beginning with OUTRAGEOUS ACTS AND EVERYDAY REBELLIONS (1983), a foundational collection of essays that blended personal memoir with sharp political commentary. The book established her distinct voice, moving effortlessly from the humorous absurdities of patriarchy to deeply serious examinations of systemic violence against women. A few years later, she published MARILYN (1986), an intimate biography of Marilyn Monroe that reframed the Hollywood icon not as a tragic sex symbol, but as a victim of societal objectification and childhood trauma, showcasing Steinem's capacity for deep empathy and feminist cultural critique.

In the 1990s, Steinem shifted her focus toward internal empowerment and the psychological dimensions of activism. With REVOLUTION FROM WITHIN: A BOOK OF SELF-ESTEEM (1992), she argued that self-worth and political revolution are deeply interconnected, asserting that societal change cannot occur without internal healing. She followed this with MOVING BEYOND WORDS (1993), an essay collection that challenged rigid gender roles, examined the politics of weight and aging, and famously reimagined a world with a female pope to expose the absurdity of patriarchal religious structures.

Steinem’s later works continued to reflect her lifelong commitment to grassroots organizing and global sisterhood. In AS IF WOMEN MATTERED (2007), she compiled powerful speeches and essays from her travels, highlighting the economic and social necessity of viewing the world through a feminist lens. Her deeply moving memoir, MY LIFE ON THE ROAD (2015), detailed her decades spent traveling as an organizer, celebrating the transformative power of listening to others in community spaces, airplanes, and campus lecture halls.

In a final memoir, AN UNEXPECTED LIFE: A MEMOIR (2026), Steinem examines the progress and setbacks of six decades of activism. As she reflects on the movements she helped build and the victories won for women’s and human rights, she also looks ahead, urging new generations to imagine bolder, more inclusive paths forward. Through these published works, Steinem created an enduring literary blueprint for generation after generation of activists.

Gloria Steinem died at her home in New York City on September 2, 2026, at age 92
